MILLARD COUNTY, UTAH DRINKING WATER ARSENIC COHORT STUDY

Impact/Purpose:

1) to conduct a mortality study of health outcomes among members of a U.S. population using a Standardized Mortality Ratio analysis (SMR) and proportional hazards mortality analysis. 2) to construct a drinking water arsenic exposure matrix that factors median drinking water arsenic for a given location (i.e., residence) and the numbers of years spent in residence for use in the epidemiologic analyses.

Description:

Cohort members: Assembly of the cohort is based on historic membership records of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) in an area of Millard County, Utah which is located in the central western part of the state. Personal information including name, birth date, town of residence was collected. Vital status was confirmed with the LDS headquarters. Death certificates for the deceased were ordered from the reported state of death. Underlying cause of death was coded using the ICD-9 coding system.
Drinking water arsenic exposure: Records of drinking water arsenic exposure were collected with the assistance of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. 151 records were collected and exposures ranged from 3.5 g/L to 620 g/L.

Results from these cohort analyses will be useful to the risk assessment for arsenic by providing data to help characterize the health effects of arsenic in a U.S. population. This information are relevant in the context of hazard identification, and may provide some information in support of the quantitative assessments of risk for health endpoints of potential concern.
