Description:

The results of gas permeability and leak testing during active soil-gas sampling at Hal’s Chevron LUST Site in Green River, Utah are presented. This study was conducted to support development of a passive soil-gas sampling method. Gas mixtures containing helium and methane were used for leak detection at four probes. Three of the probes tested exhibited significant leakage. Gas permeability analysis was conducted at the probe that did not leak in addition to four other probes which likely did not leak based on a comparison of vapor concentrations with vapor probes installed by the DEQ. The gas permeability of clayey surficial soils (0 - 7 feet below ground surface) was very low (6.5E-11 - 1.5E-10 cm2). The gas permeability of deeper silty soils was significantly greater (2.0E-09 - 1.6E-08 cm2) as expected from borehole logs.
