DISINFECTION BY-PRODUCTS IN DRINKING WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS

Impact/Purpose:
(1) Use toxicity-based approach to identify DBPs that show the greatest toxic response. (2) Comprehensively identify DBPs formed by different disinfectant regimes for the 'Four Lab Study'. (3) Determine the mechanisms of formation for potentially hazardous bromonitromethane DBPs.
Description:
Due to concerns over trihalomethanes (THMs) and other halogenated by-products that can be formed during chlorination of drinking water, alternative disinfectants are being explored. Several drinking water treatment plants in the United States have altered their treatment methods and adopted alternative disinfectants in order to comply with a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation that limits the level of THMs in drinking water to 0.08 ppm. There is only very limited information concerning what chemical disinfection by-products (DBPs) are produced from these alternative disinfectants. The goal of this research is to identify previously unknown DBPs from alternative disinfectants alone and in combination with chlorine and determine their mechanism of formation.
This research will have three parts (divided into subtasks):
(1) Identify previously undiscovered DBPs using a toxicity-based approach
(2) Comprehensively identify DBPs formed by different disinfectant regimes for the 'Four Lab Study'
(3) Determine the critical factors in the formation of bromonitromethane DBPs, which have been recently shown to be extremely cytotoxic and genotoxic to mammalian cells.

(1) Report detailing the results of the Trial Run of the Four Lab Study completed.

(1) Draft papers being written for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health devoted to the Four Lab Study Trial Run. ERD scientists are the lead on the chemical characterization paper and will be co-authors on several others.
(2) New cooperative agreement with Prof. Michael Plewa (Univ. of Illinois).
(3) Journal article in press in Environ. Sci. Technol. on the genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and chemical characterization of the halonitromethane DBPs (collaboration with Prof. Michael Plewa, Univ. Illinois).
(4) Two journal articles in progress on the mutagenicity of halonitromethanes in Salmonella (collaboration with Dr. David DeMarini, NHEERL).
(5) Draft journal article in progress on the genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and identification of iodo-acid DBPs (collaboration with Prof. Michael Plewa, Univ. Illinois).
(6) Journal article submitted to Helvetica Chimica Acta on the development of the perfluorinated chloroformate derivatizing reagents for identifying highly polar DBPs (collaboration with Prof. Marco Vincenti, Univ. Torino, Italy).
(7) Other draft journal articles on different aspects of the Nationwide DBP Occurrence Study in progress/planned (treatment comparisons, analytical methods papers, stability in the distribution system, and MTBE/methyl bromide occurrence).
Relevance :This research is important to determine what chemical DBPs people are actually exposed to through their drinking water or may be exposed to due to a shift to alternative disinfection technologies, and to understand how they are formed so that they can potentially be minimized. This work relates to Drinking Water Disinfection, which is one of ORD's six high-priority areas, and it relates to Goal 2--Clean and Safe Water (2.1.7 Safe Drinking Water Research--FY04 APG: Provide a sound scientific basic for the implementation and potential revision of the Stage 2 D/DBP Rule; FY10 APG: Provide health, exposure, treatment and assessment studies to characterize the potential cancer and noncancer risks associated with DBPs, in support of OW's re-evaluation of the Stage 2 D/DBP Rule).
