ANALYTICAL METHOD DEVELOPMENT FOR PHENOLS

Impact/Purpose:

Develop an analytical method for the analysis of phenols to better assess the occurrence of these compounds. The method should demonstrate good precision and accuracy, but be rugged enough and simple enough to be suitable for compliance monitoring if the need for regulation is determined. The critical target analytes are: 2-methyl phenol; 2,4-dichlorophenol; 2,4,6-trichlorophenol; and 2,4-dinitrophenol.

Description:

This project focused on the development of an analytical method for the analysis of phenols in drinking water. The need for this project is associated with the recently published Contaminant Candidate List (CCL). The following phenolic compounds are listed on the current CCL, and are described as needing analytical methods research and occurrence data: 2,4,6-trichlorophenol; 2,4-dichlorophenol; 2,4-dinitrophenol; and 2-methylphenol. From the currently available information, OW plans to propose linking compounds on the CCL with the upcoming Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR). Under the current time line proposed for this regulation, a method for the 4 phenols listed above was reviewed and published in 2000.
