VEGA, A. M. SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT APPROACHES AND REVITALIZATION TOOLS - ELECTRONIC (SMARTE) - 09-05-2007. Presented at Clean Water Partnership Summit, Cincinnati, OH, September 05 - 06, 2007.

Impact/Purpose:

to share information

Description:

Revitalization of sites potentially contaminated with environmentally toxic or hazardous materials (e.g., brownfields) is a global concern requiring a multi-disciplinary approach to mitigate the risks to human health and the environment. Many countries have committed extensive resources to address environmental, social, and economic issues related to the cleanup and redevelopment of potentially contaminated sites. The challenge is to determine how to capitalize on the available resources, expertise, and knowledge to effectively share and transfer that information to the organizations and individuals responsible for making decisions and implementing redevelopment. Furthermore, because the earth has a limited number of resources, humans must responsibly protect natural systems in order to sustain life. By researching and developing tools and approaches for planning land use sustainably, and transferring this information to as wide an audience as possible through the web, it is hoped that the damage humans inflict on natural systems when using land can be mitigated. SMARTe is concurrently being developed as a tool to help users overcome obstacles to revitalization and evaluate reuse scenarios for a specific site, and to help users plan land use sustainably.
