Description:

With all nations facing enormous challenges related to energy security, sustainability and environmental quality, nuclear power is likely to play an increasingly important role in the future. In particular, the life-cycle emissions of criteria pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHGs) from nuclear power plants are significantly lower than from conventional fossil-fueled plants, thus, renewing interest in nuclear power as a low emissions source of electric power. This analysis focuses on an engineering-economic assessment of future nuclear power in the United States. The potential role of nuclear power over the next 30 years is examined through a scenario analysis using the US Environmental Protection Agency MARKet ALlocation (MARKAL) technology database and model. Firstly, the MARKAL energy modeling framework is described, and then the implementation of conventional and advanced nuclear technologies in the model is explained. Finally, the modeling results are presented and the impact of new nuclear capacity on emissions from the US power sector is analyzed.
