Citation:

SCHOCK, M. R. AND D. A. LYTLE. NEW INSIGHTS INTO LEAD AND COPPER CORROSION CONTROL AND TREATMENT CHANGE IMPACTS. Presented at AWWA ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION, TORONTO, QC, CANADA, July 25 - 28, 2007.

Description:

This presentation summarizes recent research into the chemistry of lead corrosion control, and focus on different areas that could impact the prediction of whether or not particular treatment changes are likely to either disturb existing lead corrosion scales, or to actually improve Pb release. These areas are:

1. Importance of ORP/oxidants in corrosion & deposition

2. Aging behavior of Pb vs Cu Pipes

3. PbO2 occurrence and implications

4. Optimizing orthophosphate dosage factors

5. Dissimilar scale materials on Pb surfaces

6. Five treatment implementation/change areas to watch

Strategies for the assessment of current corrosion control effectiveness and the importance of scale analysis and water treatment history in the determination of vulnerability to treatment changes will be covered, to assist utilities, regulators, and consultants in dealing with simultaneous compliance issues.
