Frithsen, J. PRESENTATION ON EPAS ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EIMS). U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development, National Center for Environmental Assessment, Washington Office, Washington, DC, 2000.

Description:

The Environmental Information Management System (EIMS), which integrates descriptive information (metadata) and data, is a system to capture, store, manage, and distribute information about environmental resources collected, developed, and used by EPA and its state and regional partners. EIMS is part of EPAs integrated approach to the management of metadata about scientific resources produced or used by the Agency. EIMS was developed in response to the increasingly complex nature of environmental assessments. Todays assessments require the integration of human and ecological data and utilize data collected at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The assessments typically involve multiple information management systems and numerous researchers located in geographically dispersed work sites. Successfully completing environmental assessments requires the development of shared inventories of information that support finding and evaluating the information resources for secondary use. This presentation provides additional background information about EIMS, illustrates the use of EIMS throughout the life cycle of an Agency assessment project, and explains the relationship between EIMS and its partners.
