Description:

Hyperspectral imagery was acquired three times during the 2006 agricultural growing season (late July to mid-September) over 35 corn fields in east central Illinois. The imagery was processed with an emphasis on rapid image product development (turnabround time of less than 24 hours in some cases). The resulting products were used to guide a team of scouts to locations to gather ground data. The image data product consisted of a ratio using narrow wavelengths in the red and near-infared portions of the spectrum, which was used to identify high probability areas for insect infesttation. Scouts with portable GPS-enabled computers and customized software visited image product identified locations to determine the extent of infestation or identify alternative sources of crop stress. Custom ARcPad data entry scripts were utilized to maximize scout productivity and minimize data entry errors. Results for the scouting indicated that using imagery to guide scouts in the field is more efficient than scouting randomly generated points.
