THORNELOE, S. U.S. EPA'S RESEARCH TO UPDATE GUIDANCE FOR QUANTIFYING LANDFILL GAS EMISSIONS. Presented at Sardinia 2007, Eleventh Intrnational Waste Management and Landfill Symposium, Sardinia, ITALY, October 01 - 05, 2007.

Impact/Purpose:

Conference paper

Description:

Landfill emissions, if left uncontrolled, contribute to air toxics, climate change, tropospheric ozone, and urban smog. EPA's Office of Research and Development is conducting research to help update EPA's landfill gas emission factors. The last update to EPA's landfill gas emission factors occurred in 1998 using data that where collected in support of the Clean Air Act regulations for municipal solid waste landfills. Since the promulgation of the New Source Performance Standards and Emission Guidelines in 1996, changes have occurred to landfills that are suspected to influence landfill gas emissions. The waste composition is changing in response to source reduction and material recovery programs. Changes are also occurring in landfill design and operation.
