Citation:

FONTAINE, T. FROM RESTORING FLORIDA'S EVERGLADES TO ASSESSING OUR NATION'S ECOLOGICAL CONDITION: SCIENCE PROVIDES THE BASIS FOR UNDERSTANDING AND POLICY. Presented at Academy of Lifelong Learning, Corvallis, OR, May 16, 2007.

Description:

Based on first hand experiences, Dr. Fontaine will provide a personal and insightful look at major environmental research and restoration programs he has been involved in. Starting with a visual tour through the Florida Everglades and a discussion of the $12 B science-based restoration efforts currently underway, he will describe the interplay among scientists, NGOs, tribes, business, and policy makers that are applicable at the nationwide scale as well. Dr. Fontaine will then describe EPA's efforts in assessing the condition of our Nation's water resources and will provide a glimpse into emerging areas of research, such as nanomaterial effects and valuation of ecological services that support EPA's mission to protect human health and the natural environment. Based on the presentation, audience members will be provided the opportunity to engage in an instructive (and fun!) role-play experience where they can wrestle with the many aspects of environmental issues.
