This chapter will provide the reader with a historical perspective of microbial water quality and monitoring of recreational waters, with special attention to marine environments. It will review the regulations that are currently in effect in the United States and discuss critical issues regarding microbial water quality and the ecology of indicators of fecal pollution and waterborne pathogens.
