SUSTAINABILITY: THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Citation:

YOUNG, D. M. SUSTAINABILITY: THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION. Presented at Invited Lecture, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, March 22, 2007.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public

Description:

The 21st century will provide us with a new era of environmental problems that will require new approaches to solve. These problems will be more subtle than past problems, such as the pesticide poisoning at Love Canal or burning of the Cuyahoga River, but will be just as urgent, such as finding alternative energy sources given the imminent shortage of fossil fuels and ensuring that these new energy sources can be maintained for future generations. This presentation will highlight how the US EPA is positioning itself to move into this new era of environmental problems by developing a Sustainability Research Strategy that presents a framework suitable for the entire agency. This presentation will also highlight how some of the research programs developed under the old Pollution Prevention and New Technologies Multi-Year Plan (MYP), such as Green Chemistry, Environmental Technology and Verification program (ETV), and Small Business Innovation Research grant program (SBIR), will be transitioned into the new Science and Technology for Sustainability (STS) MYP.
