KEY CONCEPTS IN BIODEGRADATION

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

This one hour segment of the course identifies the biological processes that degrade petroleum hydrocarbons and MTBE. It reviews the stoichiometry of hydrocarbon degradation by aerobic respiration, nitrate reduction, sulfate reduction, iron (III) reduction, and methanogenesis. It compares the three dimensional distribution of hydraulic conductivity, and concentrations of contaminants, oxygen, nitrate, sulfate, methane, and alkalinity at field sites. It reviews anaerobic biodegradation of MTBE by acetogenic bacteria.
