Description:

A greener method to fabricate novel core (Fe or Cu)-shell (noble metals) nanocomposites of transition metals such as Fe and Cu and noble metals such as Au, Pt, Pd, and Ag using aqueous ascorbic acid is described. Transition metal salts such as Cu and Fe were reduced using ascorbic acid, a benign naturally available antioxidant, and then the addition of noble metal salts generated the core-shell nanocomposites. The core-shell nanocomposites were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-VIS spectroscopy and may have unique properties that are not originally present in either the core or shell materials.
