ASSESSING OFF-TARGET IMPACTS OF HERBICIDE DRIFT ON NATIVE PLANTS - IMPLICATIONS FOR PLANT COMMUNITIES AND WILDLIFE

Citation:

OLSZYK, D. M. ASSESSING OFF-TARGET IMPACTS OF HERBICIDE DRIFT ON NATIVE PLANTS - IMPLICATIONS FOR PLANT COMMUNITIES AND WILDLIFE. Presented at EPA Office of Pesticide Programs, Washington, DC, December 06, 2006.

Description:

The off target movement of herbicidess onto nontarget vegetation can affect native plants, plant communities and ecosystems. Within the agroecosystem, plants provide the basis for food and shelter for wildlife. The risk assessment process to determine potential pesticide impacts to nontarget plants requires data to evaluate potential effects on individual species and plant communities of interest. In this seminar I will describe recent research at WED to develop whole plant phytotoxicity testing and plant community analysis tools to determine the effects of herbicides on native plants, focusing on annuals and perennials from Oregon's Willamette Valley grasslands. I also will discuss on-going research to link impacts on plant communities to wildlife population dynamics.
