FUTURE SCENARIOS OF CHANGE IN WILDLIFE HABITAT

Citation:

WHITE, D. FUTURE SCENARIOS OF CHANGE IN WILDLIFE HABITAT. Presented at Habitats: An Integrated Approach, Corvallis, OR, March 15 - 16, 2007.

Description:

Studies in Pennsylvania, Iowa, California, and Oregon show varying losses of terrestrial wildlife habitat in scenarios based on different assumptions about future human land use patterns. Retrospective estimates of losses of habitat since Euro-American settlement in several studies show generally large losses for most species. Future scenarios with a land development emphasis also show further substantial losses from the present. Conservation-oriented scenarios show some recovery of habitat or stable conditions compared to the present. The scenario approach to assessment of habitat change helps to engage stakeholders, however they are defined, and helps to compare alternative effects of possible human actions in the future.
