Description:

Research was conducted to evaluate landfill gas emissions at five municipal solid waste landfills which have modern control technology for landfill gas emissions. Comprehensive testing was conducted on the raw landfill gas and the combustion outlet exhaust. The project had two phases. The first included two sites in the Northeast (landfills A and B). A review was conducted to determine changes needed to sampling and analytical protocol and QA. The second phase included three sites located in the Midwest (landfills C, D and E). Of the five sites, the evaluation included two enclosed flares, two reciprocating internal combustion engines, and one boiler. Of the 44 values in AP-42 of landfill gas constituents, 29 constituents were found to the average concentrations that are half or lower than their corresponding AP-42 for all five landfills. For 16 constituents, at least one landfill has a concentration greater than the existing AP-42 value. These data will be used to update EPA's landfill gas emission factors which are used in developing emission inventories issuing air permits and conducting risk assessments.
