VEGA, A. M. CHARGE TO WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS - 11/16/06. Presented at Workshop on Appllication of Sustainability Criteria to the City of Stella, MO for Regional Revitalization, Boston, MA, November 16 - 17, 2006.

Impact/Purpose:

to present information

Description:

The focus of this workshop will be developed a Master Revitalization Plan for the community of Stella, Missouri. Stella is anticipating growth pressure from Benton County, Arkansas. Although growth is desired to recreate a viable local economy and social programs, citizens are concerned that development will also eliminate characteristics of the community and environment that are valued. Because development will not avoid alterations in the natural systems, there is a danger that their compromise will be swift and result in problems that are not recoverable or will take time, money, and human resources that are not available. However, development activities can be ordered so as to avoid serious decrease in environmental quality and to strengthen natural, social, and economic systems. This community of less than 200 people offers workshop participants the opportunity to discuss what those development activities should or could be so as to sustain those systems for future generations. The workshop is an opportunity to bring the community together with a team of scientists and planning experts; for example, ecologists, hydrologists, waste managers, sociologists, etc., to provide advice on how to be sustainable in their respective areas of expertise, then to incorporate these sustainable practices into a master plan for the community. This presentation will provide the "charge" to participants for their involvement in the workshop. Workshop goals and logistics are provided.
