WATERSHED-ESTUARY SUSTAINABILITY: WHAT STAKEHOLDERS VALUE

Citation:

SIGLEO, A. C. WATERSHED-ESTUARY SUSTAINABILITY: WHAT STAKEHOLDERS VALUE. Presented at Coastal Zone 2007, Portland, OR, July 22 - 26, 2007.

Description:

Sustainable development is defined as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs"1. To evaluate the present attributes valued versus the potential effects of development and other land use changes along the Oregon coast, a questionnaire was devised for the stakeholders in the Midcoast Watershed Council. Presently the Midcoast watershed land primarily is used for silviculture, whereas the estuaries are prime fishing, crabbing, oyster culture and juvenile salmon habitat. Because of the watershed proximity to the coast, the lower watershed is a candidate for development, particularly for retirement communities and vacation homes. The potential impacts of urban development on the Midcoast watershed, and the Yaquina estuary were explored. Using the questionnaire results and hypothetical urban development scenarios, a concept of sustainable development alternatives are developed.
