BTSC VAPOR INSTRUSION PRIMER "VAPOR INTRUSION CONSIDERATION FOR REDEVELOPMENT"

Citation:

BTSC VAPOR INSTRUSION PRIMER "VAPOR INTRUSION CONSIDERATION FOR REDEVELOPMENT". U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C.

Impact/Purpose:

The overall goal of the primer is to emphasize the importance of considering the potential for vapor intrusion early on in the redevelopment process. Early consideration of the issue will help to ensure that occupants of both existing and planned buildings will not be exposed to toxic levels of vapors from underground. Furthermore, incorporating mitigation techniques into the construction of new buildings rather than retrofitting them later can result in significant cost savings. Because there are many approaches available to mitigation, vapor intrusion need not be a “deal breaker” when it comes to redevelopment.

Description:

This primer is designed for brownfields stakeholders concerned about vapor intrusion, including property owners, real estate developers, and contractors performing environmental site investigations. It provides an overview of the vapor intrusion issue and how it can impact the approach to building construction and redevelopment. The primer summarizes techniques for quickly and cost effectively assessing the potential for vapor intrusion at a property as well as the mitigation (prevention) techniques to address it.
