INVENTORY OF U.S. GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND SINKS 1990-2011. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C.

Impact/Purpose:

The Environmental Protection Agency prepares the official U.S. Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks to comply with existing commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Under decision 3/CP.5 of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, national inventories for UNFCCC Annex I parties should be provided to the UNFCCC Secretariat each year by April 15.

Description:

The Environmental Protection Agency submits the U.S. greenhouse gas inventory as an annual reporting requirement under UNFCCC, which the United States and other developed countries signed June 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit. The EPA has submitted the greenhouse gas inventory to the United Nations every year since 1993 and has gained a reputation for the highest quality inventory in the world. In preparing the report, EPA leads an interagency team that includes DOE, DOD, the Department of State, and others. EPA collaborates on the inventory with hundreds of experts representing a dozen federal agencies, academic institutions, industry associations, consultants, and environmental organizations.
