EAST BAY WETLAND PROTECTION AND RESTORATION DEMONSTRATION PROJECT MX964238

Impact/Purpose:

The overall goal of this project is to protect a rapidly eroding segment of shoreline at Frozen Point in East Bay. This project will prevent further loss of intertidal marsh along the shoreline; will prevent saltwater intrusion from degrading adjacent brackish marshes; will allow for restoration of marshes lost to erosion; and, will help protect water quality by reducing sediment loadings. The activities described within this cooperative agreement are authorized by Section 104(b)(3) of the Clean Water Act and support the Gulf Coastal states in studies related to the causes, effects, extent, prevention, reduction and elimination of pollution.

Description:

This project represents the first in a series to protect the East Bay north shoreline from further erosion by installing rigid erosion-control structures. Additionally, intertidal marsh vegetation will be restored behind the breakwaters.
