Impact/Purpose:

The objective of this project is to collect and analyze water samples from these canals and then look for sources of the pollution in the areas where the water does not meet standards.

Description:

Charlotte County Health Dept. permits all onsite sewage treatment systems in the county, but has no dedicated funding for inspecting the 40,000 sewage treatment systems in the county to ensure that they are operational. This project will test the waters of the canals and nonpoint source drainage outfalls for bacterial indicators and nitrogen constituents and then seek out the sources of the contaminants so that improperly functioning systems can be repaired.
