INTEGRATING ECOLOGY AND SOCIOECONOMICS FOR WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION

Citation:

MORZILLO, A. T. INTEGRATING ECOLOGY AND SOCIOECONOMICS FOR WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION. Presented at Invited seminar presentation for OSU Deparatment of Fisheries and Wildlife, Corvallis, OR, October 04, 2006.

Description:

Many researchers have studied impacts of human activity on wildlife or human attitudes toward wildlife, but not both simultaneously. Understanding these interactions is critical to better understand the intricacies of real world conservation issues. The goal of my presentation is to illustrate how integrating ecology and socioeconomics can provide resource managers with the ability to make better informed decisions about resource management and conservation than by use of ecological data alone. I will present examples of two research projects: 1) Giant Panda conservation in China, and 2) estimating the feasibility of a Louisiana black bear population recovery in east Texas. In addition, I will present the framework for research that is currently underway involving urban ecology and non-target effects of pesticides on wildlife.
