NORTHERN OHIO AEROSOL STUDY: STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS EVALUATION

Citation:

MECKES, M. C. NORTHERN OHIO AEROSOL STUDY: STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS EVALUATION. Presented at 8th Annual Biosolids Conference/Workshop, Bolger Center, Potomac, MD, June 26 - 29, 2006.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

A consortium of Universities, located in northwest Ohio have received funds to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of land applied biosolids in that state. This USDA funded study includes observing land application practices and evaluating biosolids, soils, runoff water and bioaerosols. EPA’s Office of Research and Development has met with the Principal Investigators on the project team to discuss mutual interests and collaboration. As part of this effort, EPA researchers have reviewed completed bioaerosol sampling reports and evaluated cultures of microorganisms isolated from this work which were originally identified as Staphylococcus aureus. This presentation describes how the original bioaerosol work was completed and interpretation of results. It also addresses the concerns associated with monitoring fugitive emissions from land application sites and the need for using appropriate analytical techniques for defining pathogenic strains of microorganisms. Additionally, collaborative work designed to evaluate bioaerosol monitoring equipment will be discussed.
