Description:
Thyroid proliferative lesions are rather common in bony fishes but diagnostic terminology and criteria for these lesions are inconsistent in the literature. The diagnosis of proliferative thyroid lesions is especially challenging in fish due to the fact that the thyroid is not a discrete organ in most species.To simplify lesion interpretation and standardize the nomenclature, we propose specific criteria for distinguishing hyperplastic versus neoplastic changes, benign versus malignant neoplasms, and metatastic tumors versus ectopic thyroid tissue. Development of these criteria was based on the examination of a large series of thyroid masses from Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes), and other small fish species, and a reexamination of the 97 cases of proliferative thyroid lesions from the Registry of Tumors in Lower Animals collection. Specific diagnostic features are described for the primary categories of follicular cell hyperplasia, adenoma, and carcinoma, and for several proposed sub-categories.These criteria should assist fish pathologists in communicating and reporting findings regarding thyroid proliferative lesions.
