INTERNATIONAL SOURCE WATER TOXICITY MONITORING CONSORTIUM

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public

Description:

Many researchers in the field of time-relevant, on-line toxicity monitors for source water protection believe that some mechanism to guide and prioritize research in this emerging field would be beneficial. On-line toxicity monitors are tools designed to screen water quality and trigger alarms when it changes. One application is in water quality early warning systems. Information from such systems is critical for the effective maintenance of a safe product while reducing treatment costs. The International Source Water Toxicity Monitoring Consortium (ISWTMC) convened in Cincinnati, OH, USA, June 28-29, 2005. Participants represented the U.S. government, and U.S. and European drinking water utilities, non-governmental organizations, and industry groups. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss current and future research plans in the field of source water toxicity monitoring and their relationship to envisioned needs from both scientific and policy perspectives. The group intends to influence and facilitate both research and dissemination of the latest science. Results of the meeting and a brief of current U.S. EPA research efforts will be presented.
