Description:

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants used in textiles, and electronic equipment to prevent these products from burning. PBDEs have been marketed as penta- (DE-71), octa- (DE-79), and deca-brominated (DE-83) preparations. Commercial PBDE preparations were analyzed to elucidate concentrations and compositions of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs), and polybrominated dibenzofurans (PBDFs) using two-dimensional HPLC clean-up system and HRGC- HRMS quantification. Analysis of composition and content of impurities in commercial preparations is important to understand sources of emission and to estimate global inventories of PBBs and PBDDs/DFs. Commercial PBDE preparations contained both PBBs and PBDFs as impurities at concentrations in the range of several tens to thousands of nanograms per gram. Congener profiles of PBBs and PBDFs varied in accordance with the degree of bromination in technical PBDE mixtures. Potential annual emissions of PBBs and PBDFs in to the environment from the usage of commercial PBDE mixtures in 2001 were 40 and 2300 kg, respectively.
