Description:
The use of energy is a major and desirable feature of modern human existence, but it has significant impact on the planetary environment. It is, therefore, an important issue in the quest for sustainability. The search for viable policies leading to energy sustainability falls into the broad categories of societal and technological changes. The former may have great potential but difficult implementation. The latter appear to have more limited potential but relatively straightforward implementation. This gives rise to a classic dilemma where the solution will likely lie in a practical and thoughtful combination of different approaches. Perhaps, relying on technological approaches for the immediate future will ¿buy¿ enough time for longer term societal changes to be initiated and eventually take effect, and this will hopefully lead to sustainable energy use.
