Description:

SMARTe (Sustainable Management Approaches and Revitalization Tools-electronic) is a web-based decision support tool being developed by the Office of Research and Development (ORD) in partnership with the Office of Brownfields Cleanup and Redevelopment (OBCR), the Interstate Technology Regulatory Council (ITRC) and the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). SMARTe is intended to allow revitalization stakeholders to evaluate future reuse options for a potentially contaminated site. The tools and resources within SMARTe continue to be tested and expanded, and revisions and improvements occur annually to this site. It is anticipated that the full decision support capabilities will be available, October 2007. The current version of SMARTe (SMARTe 2006) is currently available for beta testing at www.smarte.org. While any user can test SMARTe and provide feedback, EPA selected three beta test projects in January 2006 to provide targeted feedback for a period of two years. Beta Projects are brownfield projects that are in the beginning stages of site redevelopment or that have encountered one or more obstacles preventing the project from moving forward. Beta Projects will provide site-specific feedback on the usefulness and usability of SMARTe, so that EPA can determine whether or not SMARTe is meeting the needs of actual communities. Stella, Missouri is one of the Beta Projects (test site) currently applying SMARTe to their revitalization efforts with their community. SMARTe liaisons are working with the Beta Projects to collect information and provide additional support when needed.
