ASSESSMENT OF PLUME DIVING
Impact/Purpose:
To assist decision-making by improving approaches to subsurface contaminant transport modeling based on evaluation of field observations and subsequent development of appropriate modeling approaches and tools.
Description:
This presentation presents an assessment of plume diving. Observations included: vertical plume delineation at East Patchogue, NY showed BTEX and MTBE plumes sinking on either side of a gravel pit; Lake Druid TCE plume sank beneath unlined drainage ditch; and aquifer recharge/discharge areas drive ground water flow. Also presented were methods to assess potential for and magnitude of diving plumes using: analytical and numerical models; field characterization techniques; and geochemical assessment.
