EFFECTIVENESS OF STREAM AND RIPARIAN RESTORATION IN THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION

Citation:

REYNOLDS, S. EFFECTIVENESS OF STREAM AND RIPARIAN RESTORATION IN THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION. Presented at Science and Technology Seminar Series, York, PA, March 01, 2006.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

The USEPA-ORD-GWERD has research projects in several locations in the Mid-Atlantic in progress to evaluate the effectiveness of stream and riparian restoration, including Mine Bank Run (Baltimore Co., MD), Susquehanna watershed (York and Lancaster Co., PA), and Leipsic watershed (Kent Co., DE). These projects are intensive field studies designed to measure a complete suite of hydrological, biological, and chemical/physical metrics to assess the effectiveness of restoration. In each case, nutrient reduction and water flow management were desired, but the mechanisms by which they were restored differ. Similarly, the potential metrics that indicate “success” in each location differ. The lack of a common “currency” by which stream and riparian restoration can be measured has limited the utility of restoration effectiveness studies to date. It is hoped that such a currency can be determined and implemented to facilitate both cost- and ecologically-effective restoration solutions in the Mid-Atlantic.
