Description:
MTBE plumes have been documented to dive beneath screened intervals of conventional monitoring well networks at a number of LUST sites. This behavior makes these plumes difficult both to detect and remediate. Electrical conductivity logging and pneumatic slug testing performed in temporary push wells are two well established technologies that are finding new applicability in characterizing sites with diving plumes. This article describes the use and evaluation of these techniques at finding a diving plume of MtBE in an aquifer that supplies water to the village of East Alton, Illinois.
