POTENTIAL NATURAL VEGETATION COVERAGE

Description:

"Potential natural vegetation is defined as the vegetation that would exist today if humans were removed from the scene and if the plant succession after their removal were telescoped into a single moment. The time compression eliminates the effects of future climatic fluctuations, while the effects of human's earlier activities are permitted to stand. The potential natural vegetation is a particularly important object of research because it reveals the biological potential of all sites" (p. 89) This coverage was developed by the Florida State University Department of geography in 1975 and is based on A.W. Kuchler's map of 1966.
