REFINING KNOWLEDGE OF HYPOXIA DYNAMICS: THE INTERACTION OF PHYSICS AND BIOLOGY MX964240
Impact/Purpose:
The combination of DO which integrates photosynthesis and respiration, the fluorescence which is an indicator of chlorophyll biomass, and turbidity that influences the photosynthetic and respiration rates can be used to better understand the dynamics of the hypoxic zone that forms each year in this area. This instrumentation will also provide fundamental data for the decision -making process concerning the use of diverted Mississippi River into the Barataria basin under various proposed plans in the Louisiana Coastal Assessment.
Description:
The specific purpose of this proposal is to expand the coupled biological/physical data acquisition by instrumenting a moored platform in the Northern Gulf of Mexico close to the Mississippi River delta off the Barataria Bay estuary. Real-time monitors for dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, and turbidity will be installed at an existing monitoring platform near the mouth of the Mississippi River in the Gulf of Mexico.
