MONITORING REPORT FOR 1995 AND 1996 - SAN FRANCISCO DEEP OCEAN DISPOSAL SITE (SF-DODS). U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C., 1998.

Impact/Purpose:

Physical, chemical, and biological monitoring of a deep-sea dredged material disposal site.

Description:

This report documents the findings of Tier 1 monitoring activities at the San Francisco Deep Ocean Disposal Site (SF-DODS) for calendar years 1995 and 1996. The regional monitoring activities included: collection of regional physical oceanographic data; net sampling of plankton and fish; census of seabirds and marine mammals; seafloor mapping of the dredged material deposit (footprint) within and in the vicinity of the SF-DODS; and collection of benthic community and sediment chemistry samples. Additional episodic monitoring activities included collecting census data in the vicinity of tug and barge combinations during transit to the SF-DODS via observers aboard tugs. Several changes in site use requirements were made as a result of the monitoring activities described in this report covering the first two years of disposal at SF-DODS.
