Impact/Purpose:

The Agency is interested in minimizing the amount of lost radioactive sources entering into the public domain. Reducing the number of radiological source in industrial use minimizes the number of lost radiological sources. This project seeks to explore currently available technologies which could replace the use of beta or gamma measurement gauges.

EPA's Office of Radiation and Indoor Air awarded a contract to demonstrate that non-nuclear measurement using optical and magnetic technology can replace radioactive devices used to measure the thickness and density of various paper, film, and plastic sheets.
