Description:

This presentation will provide an overview of drinking water research being conducted by the National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) of the U.S. EPA. The Water Supply and Water Resources Division (WSWRD) is an internationally known water research organization established to assist in responding to public health emergencies involving drinking water supplies both in the U.S. and around the globe. WSWRD is a major organizational unit within the National Risk Management Research Laboratory of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development (ORD). The Division maintains its headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, with one branch located in Edison, New Jersey. WSWRD investigates methods to prevent and control the pollution of water and to restore of the ecosystems. WSWRD also investigates ways to prevent and reduce risks due to pollution that threaten human health and the environment. The Division is responsible for providing scientific information to the Agency for policy and regulatory development related to implementation of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and its Amendments (SDWAA) of 1996. The SDWA promised to provide safe drinking water to all Americans. To this end, WSWRD assists in the development and review of rules and regulations, conducts associated background research, prepares guidance and design documents, and assists in developing and conducting workshops and training seminars. WSWRD collaborates with multiple national and international partners to anticipate emerging problems and to foster technologies that reduce the cost of compliance.
