THE LONG ISLAND BREAST CANCER STUDY (LIBCSP)

Description:

The NIEHS and the NCI are collaborating on the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project (LIBCSP), which is designed to conduct epidemiologic research on the role of environmental factors in the etiology of breast cancer in women who live in Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York. The US Congress has mandated the use of a case-control study and the Geographic Information System (GIS) database to study a list of environmental factors, including water quality, air pollution, electromagnetic fields, pesticides and other toxic chemicals, and hazardous and municipal waste. The NCI has taken the lead on this activity, constructing a program of breast cancer research which is larger than the case-control study and GIS project. An advisory board with active community representation has been assembled and has met twice in the NYC/LI area. NIEHS program staff has been involved in the planning of, and participating in, these meetings.
