NEW IMMIGRANT SURVEY: A PILOT STUDY
Description:
The principal aim of this work is to provide accurate data about immigrants and their families, including children, with regard to their economic, social, and political adaptation to the United States. This pilot study of a substantial sample of foreign-born respondents is expected to lead to a longitudinal survey to answer policy questions in the field of immigration. The study uses a prospective-retrospective survey. A questionnaire is to be administered soon after entry to obtain retrospective information on the new immigrants and their immediate and extended families. A second questionnaire would then be administered within two years to track the mobility and adaptation of these respondents. Three or four years later, a second immigrant cohort sample would be drawn from administrative records to permit comparison with the first group. The pilot is therefore intended to establish the basis for a multiple cohort longitudinal survey of immigrants in the United States.
