RARE DISEASES LIST

Description:

The rare disease list includes rare diseases and conditions for which information requests have been made to the Office of Rare Diseases. A rare disease is defined as a disease or condition for which there are fewer than 200,000 affected persons alive in the United States. The Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) was established in 1993 within the Office of the Director (OD), National Institutes of Health (NIH) to respond to the reporting requirements of the Orphan Drug Act; to implement the recommendations of the National Commission on Orphan Diseases; to respond to requests for information on rare diseases; and to support extramural and intramural research where research has been lacking, lagging, or where a scientific opportunity exists.
