STATEWIDE AUTOMATED CHILD WELFARE INFORMATION SYSTEM (SACWIS)

Description:

SACWIS stands for Statewide Automated Child Welfare Information System(s). It was authorized by Congress in 1993 to help states meet data collection and reporting requirements of the Social Security Act. The regulations at 45 CFR 1355.50 through 1355.57 provide the basis for States to request Federal financial participation (FFP) for the planning, design, development and installation of a SACWIS which is capable of interfacing with and retrieving information from other automated information systems used to administer certain Federally funded programs (e.g., titles IV-A, IV-D, XIX). In order to qualify for SACWIS funding, States' systems must, among other things, meet the AFCARS requirements in 45 CFR 1355.40. States that develop a SACWIS with Federal funding must not collect the AFCARS data from a separate information system once the SACWIS is operational.
