NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT DATA SYSTEM (NCANDS)

Description:

NCANDS collects data on child maltreatment from the States. It was developed in response to the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (Public Law 93-247), as amended, which called for the creation of a coordinated national data collection and analysis program, both universal and case-specific in scope. As a result of the legislation, a voluntary data collection program, consisting of two components, the Summary Data Component (SDC) and the Detailed Case Data Component (DCDC), was established in 1990. The objective of NCANDS is to provide State and national data on child abuse and neglect for program planning, program review, and policy development. The data are widely distributed through reports, presentations, and the Federal web site National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN) promotes scholarly exchange among researchers in the child maltreatment field. NDACAN acquires microdata from leading researchers and national data collection efforts and makes these datasets available to the research community for secondary analysis.
