This is a chapter for John Wiley & Son's Mechanical Engineers' Handbook, and covers issues involving air pollution control. Various technologies for controlling sulfur oxides is considered including fuel desulfurization. It also considers control of nitrogen oxides including post combustion Nox controls. The control of particulate matter is discussed including electrostatic precipitators and filters. There are numerous technologies for controlling organic gases. Organic compounds are composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, fluorine and sulfur. The chapter concludes discussing the capture of mercury emissions.
