Description:

The article describes the use of computer-aided data acquisition techniques to aid the research program of the Combustion Research Branch (CRB) of the U.S. EPA's Air and Energy Engineering Research Laboratory (AEERL) in Research Triangle Park, NC, in particular on CRB's bench-scale rotary kiln incinerator simulator (RKIS) facility. CRB operates a combustion research laboratory to perform fundamental research examining phenomena associated with combustion-generated air pollution from a variety of processes, including the incineration of hazardous waste. This laboratory is permitted under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) with a Research, Development and Demonstration permit, which allows a wide variety of experiments to be performed on real or surrogate hazardous waste materials. Ongoing research projects include studies examining trace metal aerosol formation, capture of toxic metals in a fluidized bed, and formation of products of incomplete combustion (PICs) from incineration processes.
