Description:

Under EPA’s Environmental Technology Verification program, which provides objective and scientific third party analysis of new technology that can benefit the environment, a combined heat and power system was evaluated based on the Capstone 30kW Microturbine developed by Cain Industries. This paper provides test results for the turbine, a CompAir gas compressor needed to boost the gas pressure to about 100 psig, and a permanent magnet generator. The system operated on biogas generated at the Colorado Pork facility in Lamar, Colorado. The system could deliver 19.9 kW of electric energy to the farm, and a fin-and-tube heat recovery system cycled cooling water from the turbine through a heat exchanger which served the digester?s heating loop. The anaerobic digester was designed to reduce odor and meet water quality requirements.
