Description:
This report evaluates the Low Temperature Thermal Treatment (LT3®) system's ability to remove VOC and SVOC compounds from solid wastes. This evaluation is based on treatment performance and cost data from the Superfund Innovative Technology (SITE) demonstration and five other case studies. The LT3® system thermal desorbs organic compounds from contaminated soil without heating the soil to combustion temperatures. The system is divided into three treatment areas; soil treatment emissions control and condensate treatment. Products include treated soil, fabric filter dust, treated-condensate and treated stack gas. Based oh the results of the SITE demonstration and case studies, the following conclusions can be drawn; (1) the LT3®)system can process a wide variety of soils with differing moisture and contaminant concentrations; (2) the LT3® system removes VOCS to below detection limits; (3) The LT3® system generally decreases SVOC concentrations, but some SVOC concentrations may increase, most likely due to chemical transformations; (4)under certain conditions, dioxins and furans may be formed during treatment and (5) remediation costs, including all activities from site preparation through demobilization, may range from $373 to $725 per ton of soil, depending on soil moisture content and regulatory requirements.
