Description:
EPA has developed a systematic approach to identify and implement options to reduce or eliminate hazardous waste. he approach is presented in a report entitled, "Waste Minimization Opportunity Assessment Manual" (EPA/625/7-88/O03). his report describes the application of the waste minimization assessment procedures to a truck assembly facility in Chillicothe, Ohio. his facility volunteered to participate in the project and provided technical support during the study. he relative comparison used in this study indicates that the best options appear to be: ) reducing paint mix volumes through closer control, 2) minimizing solvent contamination by using a different working container and procedures and 3) improving transfer efficiency by installing electrostatic painting in the chassis booth. wo options ranked with moderately good scores: ) dewatering paint solids and recycling the booth waters and chemicals and 2) using ion exchange to recycle the phosphate/E-coat rinse water. he option for bath maintenance on the phosphate/E-coat line ranked last, however still within a reasonable range. ne option which recommended procedural and small equipment changes for painting was not evaluated during the feasibility analysis phase, because the costs and savings could not be projected at this time. he associated waste minimization techniques however appear to be technically and economically viable.
