Description:
A solvent chemical inventory was performed at Newark AFB to develop a chemical usage profile of the Building 4 facility, and identify primary sources of solvent emissions. This survey was performed in two parts. Part 1 consisted of a chemical inventory survey which defined solvent chemical usage rates and locations. Part 2 was the development of a mass balance profile for the two most commonly used solvents: 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (CFC-113) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). The results of the mass balance efforts were used to identify significant CFC-113 and TCA emission sources and develop a test matrix for quantifying solvent emissions from the identified sources. It was found that nearly all of the CFC-113 is lost from sources that are vented either directly to the atmosphere or to poorly operated solvent vapor recovery systems.
